Initiates Zone

NOTICE: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THERE WILL NOT BE AN INITIATES ZONE FOR THE 2023 EVENT

The Shady Traders camp

What is the Initiates Zone?

The Initiates Zone is an area right next to the tribes that is set aside for themed camps that aren’t part of a tribe. It’s open to any Wastelander with a fully themed camp that has a similar visual look as the Green Place tribes. Camping here will be managed, so you must have a themed camp to join us in this corner of the Theme Zone.

What are the requirements to camp in the Initiates Zone?

You need to have a fully themed camp that fits with the Green Place aesthetic, and you need to arrive on site by sunset on Wednesday. Space is first come first served, and at sunset we’ll start allowing unthemed camps to take up any space not claimed by Green Place Initiate camps. If you arrive after that, you are of course welcome to set up nearby, but we won’t be able to keep the area open for you after dark or later in the week.

How themed does my camp need to be?

Your camp needs to meet the theme standards Wasteland sets for placed tribes, and it should fit in with the Vuvalini/nomadic look of the Green Place. All areas of your camp that are visible to the public should adhere to a post apocalyptic aesthetic, including tents and structures, seating, lighting, vehicles, etc. Give thought to theming frequently-used items like trash cans, water bottles, eating utensils, and cooking gear. Unthemed things that you need in camp, like coolers, tents, or cars, should be covered with themed tarps and/or hidden behind structures so that they aren’t visible from the road or from your neighbors’ camps. Check out the Theme page for more specific ideas.

What is the theme of the Green Place?

The Green Place Ward draws its inspiration from the Vuvalini of Fury Road, as well as the look of other nomadic desert wanderers. It envisions what a gathering of the scattered Vuvalini clans might look like: textiles rather than metal bits, curtains rather than walls, rugs and beautiful things saved from the World That Was, or created from salvage in the new wasteland culture.

So does my Wasteland persona have to be a Vuvalini? Are only women allowed in the Green Place?

Nope! There are no requirements about persona or identity for camping in the Green Place. The tribes who call the Ward home have a variety of themes and are made up of a diverse group of Wastelanders, and we expect the Initiates Zone will be similarly varied. What we’re hoping to create is a neighborhood with a shared nomadic look, made up of people who are excited to be camping next to others with a similar aesthetic to their own. If you like the look in the Green Place Aesthetic photo album and feel your camp is similar, we’d love to have you join us!

How do I apply to camp in the Initiates area?

There is no formal application process. We would love to see photos of your camp before Wasteland, and can help answer any questions you have about theming or building your camp, but based on Wasteland Admin’s wishes, we will not be asking Initiate camps to apply for approval. All you need to do is build a themed camp and show up on site on Wednesday before sunset. Donda and Kodiak will be on hand to help Initiates find space to set up, and turn away anyone without a themed camp. You are responsible for making sure you meet Wasteland’s standards of theming, and failing to do so will reflect badly on you, and we may ask you to move your camp. The Green Place is a community, don’t let your neighbors down!

Can I get early entry to the Wasteland site? Will my camp be on the official map?

No. Only themed tribes who applied for placement for the given year can get early entry and a marked place on the map. But the Green Place as a whole will be on the official map, so you can tell people to find your camp by coming to the ward. Camping in the Initiates area is also a great stepping stone to starting or joining a tribe for next year — with a themed camp built, you’re more than halfway there! Be sure to take pictures of your camp in both daylight and after dark, so if you do decide to apply for tribe placement the next year, you’ll have the photos you need for your application.

Does my camp need to be interactive? Do I need to host an event or offer a service to other Wastelanders?

Nope, in the Initiates Zone your camp can be just for you! All we ask is that it’s themed up to Wasteland’s standards and has a similar aesthetic to the rest of the Green Place. (But interactivity is another great step towards applying as a tribe next year!)

Can I keep my vehicle in my camp?

Yes! If it’s unthemed, you need to cover it with a tarp or other disguise, and keep it covered all week. Try to make sure it can’t be seen from the street or from the camps on either side of you. If you don’t need to get in and out of your vehicle frequently during the event, you can also park your vehicle in the unthemed lot at the western end of the Wasteland site. And if your vehicle is themed, put it front and center! Your neighbors will love seeing it, and it’ll add to the overall aesthetic of the Ward.

How big can my camp be?

We have a fairly large area set aside for the Initiates camps, and can accommodate just about any size camp you can throw at us. We recommend all camps only use as much road frontage as your main public structure(s) require, and that everything else (kitchen, private areas, personal tents) get put behind them. Narrow but deep is our goal to fit as many people as possible, and cozy up to each other to create a comfy community look! Please only take up the amount of space you need for your camp, try not to spread out your tents and structures any more than they need to be, but beyond that, any size camp is fine.

So how does this work once I get to site?

When you get to site, drive in towards the City and turn left on Seven Sisters Blvd, one block before the City walls. Drive all the way to the eastern end of Seven Sisters, then turn right onto Fallout Path — you’ll know you’re there when you can see the open desert beyond. Donda and Kodiak will be on hand until sunset Wednesday to welcome Initiate camps and help them find space to set up, so if you see someone waving you down on Fallout Path, pull over and introduce yourself. Space is first come first served, so we’ll fill in from the southern (closest to the City) edge of the Initiates area and work north towards Seven Sisters. The earlier you get there, the closer you’ll be to the Green Place tribes and the City beyond. We have a lot of space to work with, but also a lot of camps that want to call the Green Place home, so snuggle up and make friends with your neighbors!

Will there be any special activities for the Initiates?

Each year we provide the Initiates Quest, which is a checklist of activities to do, ways to get more involved in the Green Place and wider community, and things to consider for building your camp into a full tribe, or integrating yourself into an existing tribe. Completion is not required, but we just might have some cool rewards for those who do complete it!

I still have questions, who can I contact for more information?

The Green Place Wardens are Donda and Kodiak. Head over to our Find Us page for ways you can get in touch with us and get involved in the Green Place community.
