What is a Ward?

A ward is an organized neighborhood of tribes at Wasteland Weekend that all share a common theme. There are three other official wards at Wasteland Weekend: The Den, Goodneighbor, and Undertown. Wards are always located in the Theme Zone and made up of tribes that have gone through the official application process and received placement by Wasteland Command.

What’s the Green Place’s theme?

We are centered on a nomadic theme. Our tribes take a lot of inspiration from the Vuvalini of Mad Max: Fury Road, the aesthetic of real-world Bedouin camps, or other nomadic desert wanderers. The Green Place envisions what a gathering of the scattered Vuvalini clans might look like: textiles rather than metal bits, curtains rather than walls, rugs and beautiful things saved from the World That Was, or created from salvage in the new wasteland culture. See our theme page for more information!

Where is the Green Place?

“A long night’s run, heading east.”
The Green Place is located on the eastern edge of the Theme Zone, just outside the city, with our backs to the open desert. Just head all the way east on Fury Road (the road that passes right in front of the city wall), or all the way south on Fallout Path (the last road running the length of the event space on the east end) and you’ll be right in the middle of our beautiful ward!

How do I join?

Start by talking to one of the wardens of the Green Place! We’d love to chat and see if you fit our aesthetic. Once we’re in agreement about you joining our ward, if you’re applying to be a placed tribe, all you have to do is select “Green Place” on the ward section of the Wasteland Weekend Official Tribe Application. (Please note that selecting that option on the application without talking to us first is not going to get you placed in the ward! We need to know beforehand!) If you’re not planning on applying for placement because your group is too small or you need an extra year to get to that step, you’re welcome in the Initiates Zone! See the Initiates Zone page for more information.

How do I get my tribe officially placed?

That is not up to us in any way, so I’ll let the Wasteland Weekend Overlords explain it themselves. In regards to reaching their requirements, we are here to help, as both Wardens, experienced Wastelanders, and tribe runners. Feel free to post in any of our community spaces or ask the wardens directly if you have any questions about how to theme things, recommendations on how to make your structure hold up to the wind, or anything else. Find our community and contact information here.

What is the Initiates Zone?

The Initiates Zone is an area that was an experiment for our first year in 2019, and was successful enough to be returning. It is an area within the official Theme Zone set aside for campers who normally would not be able to camp in the Theme Zone. It is intended for small and solo camps (too small to apply for placement) and for new tribes that need a stepping stone before making the leap to apply for official placement. Regardless of camp size, anybody camping in the Initiates Zone is held to the same theme standards as officially placed tribes. Your camp must be 100% in theme! See the Initiates Zone page for more information.

What is there to do in the Green Place?

Plenty! We are home to several tribes, and all of them have their own events and interactive elements. In the past we have had things like the Backwoods Convoy’s famous Chili Cookoff, the Clan of the Boltcutters’ yearly Vuvalini Gathering, an emergency costume repair service by the Ragweavers, a variety of games available at the OG Arcade/Temple of Valhalla, and the Green Place official Wardens’ Walking Tour, among many other things! We also house the official Wasteland Weekend Archery Range, where you can come to shoot. (Lender bows may be present, but it is recommended that you bring your own gear if you can.) We are also planning to have a new communal space this year, which we encourage people to use for gatherings and as a space to come play acoustic instruments.

What’s a Vuvalini?

Have you seen Mad Max: Fury Road? Remember the badass biker ladies? Yeah. Them.

So does my Wasteland persona have to be a Vuvalini? Are only women allowed in the Green Place?

Nope! There are no requirements about persona or identity for camping in the Green Place. The tribes who call the Ward home have a variety of styles within the nomadic theme and are made up of a diverse group of Wastelanders. What we’re hoping to create is a neighborhood with a shared nomadic look, made up of people who are excited to be camping next to others with a similar aesthetic to their own. If you like the look of the Green Place photos around this site and feel your camp is similar, we’d love to chat with you about joining us!

I still have questions, who can I contact for more information?

The Green Place wardens are Donda and Kodiak. Head over to our Find Us page for ways you can get in touch with us and get involved in the Green Place community.
